Step 2.10 Mutations

You observed the processes of transcription and translation in the previous animations. The DNA has the information to produce mRNA that is translated into an amino acid sequence.

This process is not always perfect. Sometimes DNA can be changed and this can alter the function of proteins. It can be an addition, substitution, or deletion of nucleotides in the DNA. Changes to nucleotide sequences of the DNA molecule may result in different mRNA sequences that produce a different protein. Mutations can result in no changes at all in the gene product, whereas at other times, there is a change. Watch the following animation and then answer the following question in your idea basket.

Add your ideas to the Idea Basket

Add ideas in your idea basket on how and why a mutation may or may not affect the production of starch or sugary corn.
